MISSION

Consuming less means making the choice to buy sustainable products, to take care of them properly to use them longer and not to give in to the sirens of black Friday and other promotions' which make you buy products that you ultimately don't need .

At Alaskan we offer:

  • To think about your purchase, ask us all the questions you want before hitting the order button. Returns are obviously possible but at your expense because we want to involve you in the act of purchase and avoid as much as possible. the ecological scourge of customer returns (a lot of CO2 is generated by customer returns). To put an end to the "finally I have no use of it" "the gift was bought in duplicate", "I changed my mind"...
  • To take care of Alaskan MAKER product to make it last a long time . We tell you everything here about the care of waxed canvas.

MISSION

Our obsession is to develop the eco-design of our products to make them more sustainable, more easily recyclable and more respectful of the environment and all of this best price.

To produce better we can:

  • Improve design and manufacturing to make your product last longer.
  • Do not push yourself into consumption with over the top ads and sales.
  • When possible, produce as locally as possible to support employment in France.
  • When this is not possible because of too high production prices or inexistent industrial tools, produce abroad (China or Portugal) with human consideration (wages and decent working conditions) and the environment (as little CO2 emissions as possible from the beginning to the end of the product chain). BETTER consuming is RETHINK product packaging.

We have given a lot of thought to the impact of our packaging. Sending you our waxed canvas products involves certain technical constraints.
We cannot send an apron or bag without protecting it. It would arrive unfolded, crumpled or damaged. Waxed canvas stored for long periods in contact with certain absorbent materials such as cardboard or fabric ends up staining which would have a bad effect.
We therefore opted for a PET pouch from the recycling sector. This pouch is recyclable again or even better you can reuse it to take your sock,shoes,ect on a trip and be an organized backpacker! For more informations, read this article

REUSE is always better than RECYCLE ?

When products are reused, the use of disposables decreases, which means less waste. In addition, the use of carbon and raw materials is decreasing as fewer new products are produced.

SHIPPING

It is impossible to send you an unprotected package. (we let you imagine the state otherwise). We used previously white plastic shipping sleeves. Inexpensive, ultra resistant, readily available in all sizes. We could have been satisfied,but the problem is thatthis kind of plastic packaging ends up in microparticles in the ocean.
So since 2021 we have been aiming to ban all these pouches for the 'shipping. This is a time consuming project.

1st challenge: Study all the other alternatives:

Biodegradable plastic / Bio-based plastic / cardboard or reusable pouch.
The result is without appeal : the resulting kraft of FSC forest is the most ecological solution. (See the results of our study here)

2nd challenge: Find an alternative to the cardboard box that cannot fit all our products, a box with empty space of stuffed with plastic bubbles kills indeed the entire concept :)

So we looked for soft kraft pouches that were strong enough to withstand the transport . The best part is that they can be adapted to the size of the product we send.

It took us a short year of research to find the right supplier. But Tadaaa! This is what our future shipping pouches will look like:
